The interaction of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylphosphoric triamide with chlor
al gives dimethylformamide, chloroform, and a complex mixture of phosp
horus-containing products, amongst which N',N'-tetramethyl-N''-(2,2,2-
trichloro-1-dimethyl) phosphoric triamide was characterized by single
crystal X-ray diffraction. Dimethylamino(imino)oxophosphorane is postu
lated as a tricoordinate phosphorus (V) by-product, which undergoes ol
igomerization or reaction with other components of the reaction system
