A 38-year old man with metastatic teratoma received a chemotherapie wi
th carboplatin 750 mg day 1 to 5, which is about the 10 fold of the us
ual dosage. Leukopenia < 500/muL and thrombocytopenia < 50.000/muL las
ted for 20 and 23 days, respectively. During myelosuppression he had s
eptic temperatures, mucositis, gastro-intestinal bleeding and vomiting
. These symptoms disappeared with hematologic recovery. There was no e
vidence of long term toxicity. Preexisting renal insufficiency due to
nephrectomy did not progress. 30 days after chemotherapy a complete re
mission was observed, alpha-fetoprotein had returned to normal by then
.
