Aw. Yu et al., PAIN PERCEPTION FOLLOWING SUBCUTANEOUS INJECTIONS OF CITRATE-BUFFEREDAND PHOSPHATE-BUFFERED EPOETIN-ALPHA, International journal of artificial organs, 21(6), 1998, pp. 341-343
Subcutaneous injection of citrate-buffered epoetin alpha (EPO-alpha) c
auses pain. Substitution of citrate buffer with a phosphate buffer in
the EPO-alpha resulted in a significant reduction in duration and seve
rity of pain. It is possible that sodium citrate which is present in t
he EPO-alpha may be the agent that causes discomfort in the patients.
