A method has been developed for an accurate estimation of the continuu
m of high-resolution gamma-ray spectra. The result is a computer progr
am, COSPAJ, which calculates a function that represents the entire con
tinuous spectral component. Determining the base line under full-energ
y peaks is the direct application of this program. We show that our me
thod is suitable for a wide variety of features including those affect
ing low radionuclide activities in environmental samples where the inf
luence of background level and shape is higher. (C) 1998 Elsevier Scie
