This paper reviews the various methods available for removing plankton
ic microalgae (microstraining, direct filtration, sedimentation, flota
tion, polishing using ozonation and granular activated carbon [O-3 + G
AC], membrane filtration), and discusses their comparative effectivene
ss, optimisation and limitations. Also described are the treatments co
nsidered most effective in the removal of odorous and/or toxic metabol
ites. In each case French technology and its world-wide applications a
re compared to those documented in the literature. The article conclud
es with recommendations on the most appropriate processes for treating
eutrophic waters.
