Abstract
4-Benzyloxy-4'-(2,3-dihydroxypropyloxy)biphenyls with lateral methyl s ubstituents are a novel class of amphiphilic mesogens displaying therm otropic and lyotropic smectic and columnar mesophases due to microsegr egation of hydrophilic regions from all-aromatic segments in the absen ce of a flexible alkyl chain, absence of a flexible alkyl chain.
