Complex absorbing potentials represent a powerful tool for the investi
gation of quantum resonances. However, they have to be carefully chose
n for each physical situation. The purpose of this Letter is to show t
hat non-optimized complex potentials can be used within the general fr
amework of perturbation theory. The procedure is widely independent of
the particular form of the absorbing potential at the expense of deal
ing with higher-order perturbation expansions. Its efficiency is demon
strated on the multichannel vibronic predissociation of the LiH molecu
le. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
