R. Akers et al., A TEST OF THE FLAVOR INDEPENDENCE OF THE STRONG INTERACTION FOR 5 FLAVORS, Zeitschrift fur Physik. C, Particles and fields, 60(3), 1993, pp. 397-420
We report on a measurement of the ratio of the strong coupling constan
ts a, (Mo) for various data samples with different quark flavour compo
sitions obtained from e+e- annihilation at LEP. We select events with
muons, electrons, and D+/- mesons from charm and bottom decays, event
s with highly energetic K(S)0 mesons originating predominantly from st
range quarks, and events with highly energetic stable charged particle
s from a combination of up, down and strange quarks. From the jet prod
uction rates in these events we obtain from these samples the relative
value of alpha(s) for the individual quark flavours as alpha(S)b/alph
a(s)udsc = 1.017 +/- 0.036, alpha(S)c/alpha(S)udsb 0.918 +/- 0.115, al
pha(S)s/alpha(S)udcb = 1.158 +/- 0.164, alpha(S)uds/alpha(S)cb 1.038 /- 0.221, with quadratically combined statistical and systematic error
s. We also compare the a, values for quarks of different weak isospin,
charge and generation. No evidence for a dependence of a, on any of t
hese quark properties is observed. Finally, combining all samples and
determining the alpha(s)f/alpha(s)incl ratio for each flavour, we do n
ot find any dependence of the strong coupling constant on flavour.
