R. Neumann et al., PREJUDICE BETWEEN BAVARIANS AND NORTH GERMANS - APPLYING A NEW METHODFOR ASSESSING EVALUATIVE ASSOCIATION WITHIN PREJUDICE, Zeitschrift fur experimentelle Psychologie, 45(2), 1998, pp. 99-108
We were concerned with prejudice between Bavarians and Worth Germans a
nd examined in participants from both regions how closely the respecti
ve ingroup and outgroup is associated with negative attitudes. To asse
ss the association between social category and generalized attitude, t
he newly developed ''Implicit Association Test'' (IAT) of Greenwald, M
cGhee and Schwartz (in press) was employed. Results of the IAT reveale
d that first names of each outgroup were judged more negatively than f
irst names of each ingroup. Moreover, a positive correlation between t
he IAT measures and an explicit prejudice measure was obtained. Conseq
uently, interindividual differences in the endorsement of prejudices a
re not only a function of correctional processes but also of the repre
sentation of prejudice. The findings suggest that group membership inf
luences the representation of prejudice.
