If I can just, I wanted to just jump on one distinction, and that is t
he intrinsic-extrinsic in the context book by Duranti and Goodwin. I t
hink, well that's a common distinction in conversation analysis. Cicou
rel uses a different distinction. And I think the language we use to d
escribe the issue itself is one that reflects values. So for instance,
I would talk about narrow context and broad context. Now that begins
to suggest a different valuing than intrinsic and extrinsic, which is
somehow if it's intrinsic it's good, if it's extrinsic it's a little b
it shaky. Whereas when we start to talk about narrow and broad I think
it in general is good to be broad and not be narrow, so that we begin
to load, if you will, our evaluations of what is valued just as we be
ing to talk about them.(1)
