Js. Krause et De. Rohe, PERSONALITY AND LIFE ADJUSTMENT AFTER SPINAL-CORD INJURY - AN EXPLORATORY-STUDY, Rehabilitation psychology, 43(2), 1998, pp. 118-130
This study identified the relationship between personality and multipl
e components of life adjustment after spinal cord injury (SCI). One hu
ndred five men completed the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI), a mea
sure of personality. In general, the NEO-PI accounted for the greatest
amount of variance of scales reflecting general adaptation. Of the gl
obal domains, only two scales were strongly associated with the SCI ou
tcomes. Among the NEO-PI facet scales, Depression was correlated with
the greatest number of outcomes, whereas Warmth, Positive Emotions, Ac
tions, and Values were correlated with superior outcomes. These findin
gs suggest that assessment of personality is an invaluable aid in pred
icting long-term outcomes after SCI and should remain a priority in di
verse rehabilitation settings.
