Abstract
The lichen genus Solorina Ach., occurs very rarely in, the Southern He misphere. Two bipolar species grow in tundra vegetation on the mountai ns of South Island, New Zealand; the calcicole S. spongiosa, has a ver y restricted occurrence on calcareous soils in Nelson and Fiordland, w hile the more widely distributed S. crocea is a rather local component of high-alpine vegetation in the schist, and greywacke mountains of N elson, Canterbury and Otago, east of the Main Divide. Neither species is known from similar habitats in either Australia or continental Sout h America. Details of morphology, chemistry, and habitat ecology are g iven for both species and their distributions in New Zealand are mappe d.
