Abstract
The structure and development of the apothecia in Arctopeltis thuleana were studied. A cupulate hypothecium is present. The ontogeny follows the pattern described from some placodioid Lecanora species (e.g., L. opiniconensis) and the genus Rhizoplaca. The significance of ontogene tic characters in the distinction of the Lecanoraceae and Parmeliaceae is discussed. The presence of a cupula is regarded as a weak distingu ishing character in the Lecanoraceae.
