Abstract
The cyclic thioether-thioester ligand [7,8-mu-SCH2C(O)S-7,8-C2B9H10](- ), [L1](-), is a source of strongly co-ordinating mercapto and thioeth er groups. Upon reaction with complexes with metal ions in oxidation s tate higher than + 1, [L1](-) modifies to the dianionic ligand [7-S,8- SCH2C(O)OMe-7,8-C2B9H10](2-), [L2](2-). Reaction of [NMe4][L1] with [M -2(C5Me5)(2) Cl-4] (M = Rh-III or Ir-III) in MeOH produces [M-2(C5Me5) (2)(L2)(2)], a molecule with an earmuff shape.
