The current status of the research in genetics of cardiac diseases cau
sing sudden death is reviewed. Few techniques will impact medicine as
will those of molecular biology. The identification of the gene-causin
g diseases will allow the use of better preventive, diagnostic, and th
erapeutic options. From genetic counseling at present to gene therapy
in the future, the new challenge for the clinician will be to acquire
the new information provided by molecular biology and apply it at the
bedside to improve the quality of life for the patient.
