By measuring positrons and P-delayed gamma-rays emitted from mass-sepa
rated sources, the decay of Cu-56 (4(+),T-z = -1,T = 1) to states in t
he doubly-magic nucleus Ni-56 was Studied for the first time. The half
-life of Cu-56 was measured to be 78(15) ms, and four beta-delayed gam
ma-rays were assigned to its decay. The resulting experimental data on
Fermi and Gamow-Teller strength are compared with shell-model predict
ions. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
