V. Merschsundermann et al., TESTING OF SOS INDUCTION OF ARTIFICIAL POLYCYCLIC MUSK FRAGRANCES IN ESCHERICHIA-COLI PQ37 (SOS CHROMOTEST), Toxicology letters, 95(3), 1998, pp. 147-154
Synthetic fragrances are widespread in the environment. Residues were
found in animals, human tissues and breast milk. Therefore, six artifi
cial polycyclic musk fragrances-Galaxolide, Tonalide, Celestolide, Pha
ntolide, Cashmeran and Traseolide-were tested for SOS induction using
the Escherichia coli PQ37 genotoxicity assay (SOS chromotest) in the p
resence (+S9) and absence (-S9) of an exogenous metabolizing system. A
ll compounds tested exhibited no SOS inducing potency with the SOS chr
omotest. These results could be rated as one indicator of the biologic
al inactivity of this group of compounds with respect to genotoxicity.
