The nucleon mean free path in nuclear matter is studied within the fra
mework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation extended to incorpo
rate ground-state correlations. The ground state particle-hole excitat
ions give rise to a partial opening of the Fermi sphere and to an enha
ncement of the mean free path above the Fermi surface. A comparison wi
th the classical limit and the mean free path in neutron matter is dis
cussed along with a simple prescription to include the isospin depende
nce. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
