PES sulphonated with concentrated sulfuric acid and chlorosulfonic aci
d has been investigated, PES can not be sulphonated at ambient tempera
ture, but under heating condition it can be sulphonated by concentrate
d sulfuric acid. The sulphonation degree and degradation of polymer in
crease with the increase of the temperature and the time. PES can also
be sulphonated by chlorosulfonic acid at ambient temperature. There w
as a period of time at the beginning of the reaction during which PES
is hardly sulphonated if concentrated sulfuric acid was used as solven
t. And then, velocity of sulphonation increases obviously. When dichlo
romethane was used as solvent, the similar results did not exist. More
over velocity of sulphonation does not change obviously, Structure and
properties of sulphonated PES were characterized by means of FTIR and
H-1 NMR.
