A scheme for psychotherapeutic group work with men based on depth psyc
hology is presented from a position critical of patriarchy. The centra
l focus lies on character problems and emotional difficulties characte
ristic for men, which are viewed here as symptoms of a ''patriarchal s
yndrome''. Using some typical examples it is shown how group dynamic a
nd transfer processes are used in men's groups. Finally, on the basis
of a qualitative study typical development lines are described with pa
rticular reference both to changes in the self-evaluation as a man and
the effects on relationships in partnership, friendship and at work.
