Owing to the poor health care facilities and little awareness either o
n the preventive or curative health from amongst the people of Burari
(a village of Delhi), a team of nine women were trained to work as hea
lth functionaries at the grassroots level, This paper deals with the r
ationale for initiating this project, the objectives and the complete
process undertaken in identifying, training and finally setting into m
otion the work of Health Workers (January 1994 to January 1995), in th
eir respective settlements. The significance of this case lies in comm
unity participation at every stage of the programme.
