Rapidly quenched Cu100-xPx (x = 4.0-19.6 at%) alloy ribbons were prepa
red by melt spinning. The characteristics of the alloys were investiga
ted by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and differentia
l scanning calorimetry. The results indicate that rapid quenching of t
he Cu-P system results in the formation of a microcrystalline structur
e of alpha-Cu and Cu3P but no amorphous phase. On the other hand, rapi
d quenching also leads to the supersaturated solid solution of phospho
rus in alpha-Cu, and the degree of supersaturation increases with the
phosphorus concentration.
