Seizures induced in rats by kainic acid microinjection into the perirh
inal cortex were studied electrophysiologically and behaviorally and c
ompared with known features of seizures following kainic acid injectio
n into the amygdala. Unlike amygdalar seizures, perirhinal cortical se
izures did not generalize to become Limbic seizures but rather spread
to sensorimotor cortex to become manifest as motor seizures. Perirhina
l cortical seizures also required larger kainic acid doses for provoca
tion and were briefer. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reser
