Abstract
Using a cross-level framework, the authors hypothesized that work grou p cohesiveness and perceived task competence would be associated with individual group members' performance and organizational commitment. S pecifically, the authors tested whether perceived task competence was positively related to performance and organizational commitment and wh ether work group cohesiveness would explain variance in performance an d organizational commitment beyond what was explained by perceived tas k competence. Fi,nr hundred and seventy-one Air Force and civilian emp loyees representing 71 groups from several sites across the United Sta res were used to lest the hypotheses. Hierarchical linear modeling ana lyses produced support for the expected effects.
