Abstract
An investigation is made of the propagation of laser radiation through the Dirac vacuum polarized by a strong electric field. Calculations a re made of the refractive index of the vacuum and the angle of rotatio n of the plane of polarization of the radiation. The possibility of me asuring strong electric fields is assessed. (C) 1998 American Institut e of Physics.
