The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) incorporates several h
ost-derived proteins during the budding process. Here, Michel Tremblay
and colleagues review recent studies that indicate that virion-bound
host molecules are still functional and are affecting the biological p
roperties of HIV-1. Therefore, these nonviral components should be con
sidered as factors putatively affecting the pathogenesis of HIV-1 infe
ction.
