The melt-crystallized orthorhombic modification of syndiotactic polyst
yrene (s-PS) was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Sin
gle crystals of the beta' modification were prepared from a thin film
by melt crystallization at 240 degrees C. Their high-resolution images
viewed along the molecular stem axis were successfully obtained, from
which images the lateral arrangement of the individual molecular stem
s in the modification can be read out. The ''faulted'' structure defin
ed in our previous papers seems to hold a majority in the beta' modifi
cation, to make a different ''ordered'' structure. (C) 1998 Elsevier S
