Na. Marova et Gn. Alekhina, THE VOLUMES OF THE ATLANTIC VOLCANIC SEAMOUNTS AND DEPENDENCE OF THEIR DISTRIBUTION ON THE CRUSTAL EVOLUTION, Okeanologia, 38(3), 1998, pp. 435-441
Morphometric data for more than 1300 seamounts of the Atlantic oceanic
crust have been analysed. Peculiarities in the seamounts distribution
depending on lithospheric age and geographical location were revealed
. It involves calculated densities of their distribution in the region
s of different ages, volumes of the composing matter and some other re
levant characteristics which are related to the intensity of intraplat
e volcanic processes during various geological ages. An asymmetry in t
he distribution of volcanic seamounts was also found, which was correl
ated with inhomogeneity of geodynamic processes. A method of calculati
on of seamount volumes taking into account the thickness of sedimentat
ion was developed. The total volume of volcanic matter of the Atlantic
seamounts was evaluated as 1.66 million km(3).
