The statistical theory of signal detection and the estimation of its p
arameters are reviewed and applied to the case of detection of the gra
vitational-wave signal from a coalescing binary by a laser interferome
ter. The correlation integral and the covariance matrix for all possib
le static configurations are investigated numerically. Approximate ana
lytic formulas are derived for the case of narrow band sensitivity con
figuration of the detector.
