Discovery of the photo-induced chaos in the Briggs-Rauscher system is
reported. The chaotic oscillations were observed between the large- an
d the small-amplitude simple oscillatory states existent in low and hi
gh light intensity regions, respectively. Period-doubling sequence fro
m the large-amplitude oscillations to the chaos was observed. Determin
istic nature of the chaos was confirmed by the next-amplitude return m
ap. The stretching and folding mechanism of the trajectories was revea
led through the three-dimensional attractor reconstructed via the sing
ular value decomposition method. The chemical origin of the photoinduc
ed chaos is discussed based on the photoautocatalysis of HIO2. (C) 199
