Abstract
One of the factors limiting the sensitivity of wavelength modulation e xperiments is the fringing that is created by inadvertent multiple ref lections between parallel optical surfaces in the apparatus. It is sho wn that the effects of this ''etaloning'' can be countered by using de tection harmonic orders greater than the second. A theoretical basis f or the effect is presented and compared with experimental results obta ined. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.
