Several R&D laboratories, around the world are actively pursuing the i
ntegration of circuitry on the same transparent substrate as the activ
e matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD). This article reviews the fiel
d of on-substrate integrated circuits for AMLCDs. The potential benefi
ts of integrated AMLCDs are outlined, and the thin-film transistor tec
hnology on which they are based is described. The display subsystem re
quirements and the circuit functions needed to address AMLCDs, includi
ng examples of the standard topologies used in integrated drivers, are
considered. Results of circuit and display performance are presented
and the issues of yield, redundancy, testing, repair and system partit
ioning are discussed.
