Abstract
The feasibility of using flat, electrodeless fluorescent lamps for out door signal applications was studied. These applications generally use incandescent lamps, which are energy inefficient and short lived. The lamps described in this paper were designed to have a peak luminous i ntensity of 240 cd throughout life, a rise time of 1 sec to reach the peak luminous intensity for ambient temperatures ranging from -20 to 6 0 degrees C, and correct x and y chromaticity coordinates when used wi th red, yellow, and green colored filters.
