Abstract
The sequences of hepatitis B virus (HBV) genomes isolated from the ser um of five infants born to hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive-carr ier mothers were analyzed. All infants were protected against perinata l infection of HBV by immune prophylaxis that was judged successful. A lthough HBV variants with mutation(s) or deletion(s), in the preS, cor e promoter and preC genes, which are believed to be directly related t o the negative serum marker for HBV infection, were not found in any o f the infants, hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) escape mutant H BV was found in two infants.
