Radical polymerizations of methacrylamides having methionine, methioni
ne sulfoxide, and methionine sulfone moieties, and oxidations of the p
olymethacrylamide having a methionine moiety were examined. The radica
l polymerizations of the monomers were carried out using 2,2'-azobis(i
sobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as an initiator to afford the corresponding po
lymers in good yields. The polymer with a methionine structure was oxi
dized by 2 and 10 equivalents of hydrogen peroxide to obtain polymers
having methionine sulfoxide and sulfone structures in the side chains,
