At present only a handful of local careers services are using the Inte
rnet which is ideally placed to transmit up to date information to sch
ools. This paper reports on one of the first such projects in the U.K.
which used the new technology to link schools with their local career
s service. lt involved the development and evaluation of an Internet s
ite with a number of key features. Options included access to informat
ion on a wide variety of careers, links to-other careers sites, advice
on how to get a job, links to higher education institutions and local
further education colleges, and work experience reports. Over a year,
these features were evaluated by staff and pupils in four local secon
dary schools. The results are discussed in terms of design features, a
ccess and communication issues, and further recommendations for develo
pment. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
