Abstract
An unambiguous relationship is established between the notion of mater ial force on the reference configuration and that of energy-release ra te for a ''rigid-body'' motion (progress) of defects in homogenous ela stic bodies within the framework of elastodynamics in finite strains. This generalizes the result of Ehrlacher in linear elasticity.
