The rolling speed of a rigid cylinder (PMMA) in contact with a thick r
ubber strip is studied as a function of tensile uniaxial pre-strains a
pplied to the strip. It is shown that the observed increase in rolling
speed at increasing deformation arises directly from the decrease of
the surface energy (Dupre's energy of adhesion) due to the imposed ten
sile pre-strain.
