The main deposit of the Akchar Erg occurred during lowstand and/or pos
t-glacial eustatic rise. The ''supersurface'' that terminates this agg
radational phase corresponds to a long humid period when sea level rea
ched its maximum. Then, two successive and poorly developed eolian uni
ts cannibalized the pre-existing dunes in a globally negative continen
tal sediment budget, with the Saharan sand bypassing to the sea during
sea level highstand.
