A chemiluminescence (CL) detection method for the determination of sul
fite is described. The light produced in the reaction of Ru(bipy)(3)(2
+)(bipy=2,2'-bipyridyl)-SO32--K2S2O8 is detected. The concentration of
sulfite is proportional to the CL intensity in the range 1.5x10(-7) -
1.0x10(-4) mol/l. The limit of detection is 4.1x10(-8) mol/l and the
relative standard deviation is 4.3% for 2x10(-5) mol/l sulfite solutio
n in 9 repeated measurements. This method has been successfully applie
d to the determination of sulfite in sugar and sulfur dioxide in air b
y using triethanolamine (TEA) as the absorbent material.
