Zs. Sacks et al., HOLOGRAPHIC FORMATION OF OPTICAL-VORTEX FILAMENTS, Journal of the Optical Society of America. B, Optical physics, 15(8), 1998, pp. 2226-2234
An optical-vortex filament is characterized by a dark core of vanishin
g size and fluidlike propagation dynamics in the near-field region. Th
is type of phase singularity does not naturally occur as an eigenmode
of a cylindrically symmetric system, but it can be easily formed by co
mputer-generated holography. The size of the core is an important attr
ibute affecting vortex-vortex interactions within a laser beam. Here w
e demonstrate a means to minimize the core size, and we experimentally
show that a beam-to-core size ratio exceeding 175 may be readily achi
eved. (C) 1998 Optical Society of America [S0740-3224(98)01708-1] OCIS
