The effect of random fluctuations in the zero-dispersion wavelength is
considered for fiber four-wave mixing. Theoretical expressions for av
erage parametric gain, phase-conjugation conversion efficiency, and ga
in bandwidth are obtained and found to be in good agreement with exper
iments. Possible limitations on the noise figure in phase-sensitive am
plifiers based on fiber four-wave mixing are also discussed. (C) 1998
