The study of the regional distribution of [H-3] 2-deoxyglucose uptake
in response to an odour stimulation, or to an odourless air flow, has
allowed the determination of a global scheme of differential quantitat
ive incorporation in four compartments of the antennal lobe. Three of
them can be ranked in decreasing order of quantity of radioactivity up
take : the peripheral region of the lobe which is always the highest l
abelled area, the external part of the coarse neuropile and the glomer
uli, mainly their cortical Layer. The fourth compartment including the
inter-glomerular spaces and the outer margins of the glomeruli exhibi
ts a variable labelling, always higher than inside the glomeruli. The
location of the labelling in the glial cells and/or in the neurons is
discussed in the general context of odour processing.
