K. Bouche et al., INTERMETALLIC COMPOUND LAYER GROWTH BETWEEN SOLID IRON AND MOLTEN ALUMINUM, Materials science & engineering. A, Structural materials: properties, microstructure and processing, 249(1-2), 1998, pp. 167-175
The interaction between solid iron and liquid aluminium is studied by
immersion tests. At first, the intermetallic layers formed at the soli
d-liquid interface and their growth mechanisms are characterized. The
Fe2Al5 and FeAl3 phases are identified in the temperature range from 7
00 to 900 degrees C, and their growth is found to be mainly controlled
by a diffusion regime. Then, a theoretical approach of the phase grow
th based on the solutions of the diffusion equations is presented. The
ory and experiment agree rather well. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. A
