In this paper, the frequency of the microaerophilic gram-negative bact
erium Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (Ac) which is a component o
f the normal human oral microflora was investigated. Ac could be culti
vated from oral material (molar sulcus and/or mucous membrane of the c
heek) from 55 out of 405 healthy adults examined. This overall Ac freq
uency of 13.6% corresponds well to the few other reports existing in l
iterature. A short discussion about the possible pathogenic potential
of Ac is given at the end of the paper.
