R. Dembo et al., A FURTHER STUDY OF GENDER DIFFERENCES IN-SERVICE NEEDS AMONG YOUTHS ENTERING A JUVENILE ASSESSMENT-CENTER, Journal of child & adolescent substance abuse, 7(4), 1998, pp. 49-77
We report the results of an in-depth study of 119 youths at the Hillsb
orough County (Tampa), Florida, Juvenile Assessment Center involved in
a community-based intervention study. Comparisons were made of the ma
le and female youths on a wide range of demographic, offense and psych
osocial characteristics. Consistent with previous research, results in
dicated that male youths were more involved in delinquent activities,
whereas female youths came from more troubled family backgrounds invol
ving sexual victimization. Conclusions are drawn regarding the health
service implications of these findings.
