Abstract
The IUPAC names for atmospheric oxidation products of terpenes are lon g and complex. An alternative nomenclature is proposed, which consist of a set of six simple rules. Systematic names are generated by analog y to the well known oxidation products of alpha-pinene and sabinene an d applies to aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, epoxides, nitrates, and car boxylic acids derived from the oxidation of endocyclic and terminal C= C double bonds of terpenes. Examples of structures and names are shown for 36 compounds previously identified as atmospheric oxidation produ cts of terpenes. (C)1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
