An examination of isopod material deposited in the Museum of the the U
niversity of Costa Pica, San Pedro, revealed a new genus and species o
f terrestrial isopods, Mirtana costaricensis gen. el sp. n. which is d
istinguished by its three-articulate antennal flagellum, incurved coxa
l plates and prominent neopleurae, while noduli laterales and respirat
ory areas on any pleopod are apparently lacking. Despite this unique c
ombination characters, a closer relationship to the widely distributed
neotropical genus Ischioscia Verhoeff, 1928 call be postulated becaus
e of similar structure of mule pereopods I to 2 and pleopod I endopodi
te.
