Monomethyl ethers of oligomeric polyoxyethylenes having azide end-grou
ps were reacted with fullerenes (C-60) Depending on the feed mole rati
o, linear or star-like polymers were formed. The obtained fullerene-co
re star-like polymers (FCSP) were characterized by UV and FTIR spectro
scopies, size-exclusion chromatography, vapor-pressure osmometry, ther
mogravimetric analysis, XPS measurements, and FAB-MS. The thermal stab
ility of FCSP was higher than that of the starting polyethers. The the
rmal treatment of FCSP up to 1000 degrees C did not lead to regenerati
on of C-60. The FCSP gave stable emulsions of water-in-oil type in wat
er/toluene system. FCSP showed herbicidal activity. (C) 1998 Elsevier
