Polymerization of N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine (NP1N) by electrochemical o
xidation has been studied in various media. In CH3CN/NaClO4 (0.2 M) th
e polymerization yield is low, leading to a badly conductive material.
A salt of the dication of a dimer is characterized in 1,2-dichloroeth
ane/Bu4NBF4 (0.2 M)/CCl3CO2H (0.5 M). Lastly a polymer hoped by sulfat
e ion was obtained in high yield, in a strong acidic medium [CH3CN/H2S
O4 (2 M)/CF3CO2H (1 M)/Bu4NBF4 (0.1 M)]; a phenyl group was found to b
e lost in the course of the reaction. The electric conductivity of the
produced material was 3 x 10(-2) S cm(-1). This polymer could be re-d
oped by methanesulfonic acid after it was electrochemically reduced. (
